Birth Certificate Types — What the FCDO Accepts

This is unchanged by Vietnam's accession. The FCDO can only apostille a certificate signed by a UK registrar.

✅ Full (long-form) GRO certificate	The standard certified copy issued by a register office or the General Register Office. Recommended for Vietnam, because it names both parents — which is usually the point of asking for it.
✅ Short-form birth certificate	The FCDO will apostille it, but it does not name the parents. Vietnamese authorities frequently reject it for exactly that reason. If in doubt, order the full version.
✅ A GRO replacement we order for you	Lost the original? We can order a GRO replacement at £60 with no GRO account needed, 72-hour processing, and apostille it in the same run.
❌ Hospital birth notification	The slip issued at the hospital is not a legal record of birth. The FCDO cannot apostille it.
❌ Photocopies, scans and printouts	The FCDO will not apostille a copy of a birth certificate, even a certified one. It has to be an official certified certificate.
❌ Birth certificates issued outside the UK	A UK apostille can only go on a UK document. A Vietnamese or third-country certificate must be apostilled by that country's own authority.

Why This Is Now £79 Instead of £186

Viet Nam deposited its instrument of accession to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention on 31 December 2025, and the Convention enters into force for Viet Nam on 11 September 2026. From that date a UK document used in Vietnam needs the FCDO apostille and nothing else — the Vietnamese Embassy authentication step that used to sit after it is no longer required. That removes roughly a week from the timeline and around £100 from the cost of every document. If your document was apostilled and authenticated before the change it remains valid; you do not need to redo anything. For a birth certificate the saving is larger than average, because a GRO certificate never needed a solicitor's certification in the first place — it goes straight to the FCDO. Under the old process you paid for an apostille and then an embassy stage on top. Now there is only the apostille. You will still normally need a certified Vietnamese translation, which we arrange alongside.
