An apostille alone will not be accepted in Egypt
Egypt has not joined the Hague Apostille Convention. Every UK document intended for official use in Egypt needs the FCDO apostille and legalisation by the Egyptian Consulate General in London (2 Lowndes Street, SW1X 9ET). Depending on the document there can be a required step in between — the Egyptian Cultural & Educational Bureau for academic documents, or Chamber of Commerce certification for commercial paperwork. Getting the order wrong means starting again, so it is worth checking before anything is posted.

Full birth certificates issued by the General Register Office go straight to the FCDO for the apostille, then on to the Egyptian Consulate. If you do not have the certificate to hand, we can order a replacement from the GRO first and run both stages afterwards.

Academic documents follow a longer route. The original certificate is required — a copy will not do — and the document has to be verified by the Egyptian Cultural & Educational Bureau in London before the Consulate will legalise it. This is the step most people are not told about, and the usual reason a degree comes back rejected.

Typically used for selling or managing property in Egypt, or acting on someone's behalf in a bank or court matter. A power of attorney is drafted and signed in front of a notary or solicitor first, then apostilled and legalised. Commercial documents take a longer chain than personal ones, because a Chamber of Commerce certification sits in the middle.

Company documents — certificates of incorporation, board resolutions, invoices, certificates of origin, distribution and agency agreements — are certified by a solicitor first so the FCDO can act on them.

Commercial paperwork for Egypt needs to be certified by the relevant Chamber of Commerce before the Consulate will accept it. Which chamber and which stamp depends on the document and on what the Egyptian side has asked for, so we confirm this per order rather than assuming.
