The Legal Basis for the Change
Viet Nam deposited its instrument of accession to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention on 31 December 2025, and the Convention enters into force for Viet Nam on 11 September 2026. From that date a UK document used in Vietnam needs the FCDO apostille and nothing else — the Vietnamese Embassy authentication step that used to sit after it is no longer required. That removes roughly a week from the timeline and around £100 from the cost of every document. If your document was apostilled and authenticated before the change it remains valid; you do not need to redo anything. The accession is recorded by the Hague Conference on Private International Law, which is the depositary for the Convention.
