What We Can Apostille, and What Usually Travels With It

A CNI is a registrar-signed public document, so it goes directly to the FCDO. Most couples send more than one document, which is cheaper done together.

Work Backwards From the Wedding Date — the Notice Period Is the Slow Part

The apostille is the fast bit: 72 hours, or next working day if you are tight. What catches couples out is the step before it — you must give notice at your local register office and, in most cases, wait 28 days before the CNI is even issued. So the realistic timeline is roughly a month for the notice period, then a few days with us.

Two more things worth checking now rather than later: many countries only accept a CNI issued within the last three or six months, so applying too early can be as bad as applying too late; and a CNI is rarely the only document required — birth certificates, and a decree absolute if either of you has been divorced, usually travel with it. It is a document issued by your local register office confirming there is no legal reason why you cannot marry. Foreign registrars use it to satisfy themselves that a British national is free to marry under UK law. Almost every country outside the UK asks for one, and almost all of them want it apostilled.

You give notice of marriage at the register office for the district where you live. In most cases there is a statutory 28-day notice period before the certificate is issued. We cannot shorten that part — but the moment you have the certificate in your hand, the apostille takes 72 hours, or the next working day if you are close to your date.

It does not formally expire in UK law, but the country you are marrying in will usually impose its own limit — commonly three or six months from the issue date. Check with your venue or the local registrar before you give notice, because applying too early can be just as much of a problem as leaving it too late.
