Message or email a picture of the document and tell us the destination country. We confirm the price, the turnaround and whether an embassy step is needed.
2
Get the Document to Us
Post it by Royal Mail Special Delivery, drop it at our Guildhall Yard office, or ask us to arrange a courier collection.
3
We Pre-Check and Submit
We check the document will be accepted before it goes anywhere, then submit it to the FCDO Legalisation Office and keep you updated.

Marriage Certificate Types — What the FCDO Accepts

The FCDO can only legalise a document signed by a recognised UK official. For marriages, that means the certificate issued by the register office or the General Register Office.

DocumentNotes
✅  Register office certified copyThe standard certificate issued on the day of the marriage, or a certified copy ordered later from the register office where the marriage was registered. This is what most people have.
✅  GRO certified copyA certified copy ordered from the General Register Office. Fully acceptable, and the route we use when a client has lost the original. We can order one for you.
✅  Civil partnership certificateCivil partnership certificates are apostilled in exactly the same way and at the same price.
❌  Church, mosque or temple certificate aloneA religious ceremony certificate is not a legal record of marriage on its own. If the marriage was also civilly registered, we apostille the civil certificate instead. If it was not registered, there is nothing the FCDO can legalise.
❌  Photocopies and scansThe FCDO will not legalise a photocopy, a scan or a printout — even a certified one. We need an original certified certificate.
❌  Marriage certificates issued outside the UKA UK apostille can only be placed on a UK-issued document. If you married abroad, the apostille must come from that country's own authority.
⚠
Married Abroad? A UK Apostille Will Not Work
We are asked this several times a week. If your marriage was registered in another country, the certificate is a foreign public document and the FCDO cannot legalise it — the apostille has to be issued by the authority in the country where the marriage took place. If you are not sure, send us a photo of the certificate and we will tell you before you post anything.

Questions

Marriage Certificate Apostille — Common Questions

Yes. The FCDO legalises the physical certified certificate, not a copy of it. If you only have a photocopy, or you have lost the original, we can order a replacement certified copy for you — it is usually the quickest way to get moving.
Our standard service is from £79 and takes 72 hours from the moment your certificate reaches our City of London office. If you need it faster, our next-day service is £135 — we submit to the FCDO the same day and the apostille is released the following working day.
Yes, and the process and price are identical. The FCDO treats civil partnership certificates the same way as marriage certificates.
If the destination is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention — which covers most of Europe, the Americas, Australia and much of Asia — an apostille is all you need. Some countries, including the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and China, require an additional embassy attestation after the apostille. Tell us the destination when you enquire and we will confirm which route applies before you pay anything.
It depends on the receiving authority. Spain and Italy usually want a sworn translation; the UAE requires a legalised Arabic translation. We arrange sworn and certified translations alongside the apostille where they are needed.
The FCDO charges £40 per document at the business rate we use. That fee is already inside our £79 standard price — there is nothing extra to pay to the government.
Yes. We order a certified replacement from the General Register Office on your behalf and apostille it in the same job, so you only deal with us once.
