Who We Help

Why You Might Need an Apostille on a Death certificate

Settling an estate that reaches across borders almost always means proving the death to a foreign authority. These are the situations we deal with most.

⚖️
Probate & Estates Abroad
Foreign probate registries, notaries and courts will not open an estate file without an apostilled death certificate. This is the single most common reason clients contact us.

How It Works

From Death certificate to Apostille in Four Steps

1
Send Us a Photo
Message or email a picture of the document and tell us the destination country. We confirm the price, the turnaround and whether an embassy step is needed.
2
Get the Document to Us
Post it by Royal Mail Special Delivery, drop it at our Guildhall Yard office, or ask us to arrange a courier collection.
3
We Pre-Check and Submit
We check the document will be accepted before it goes anywhere, then submit it to the FCDO Legalisation Office and keep you updated.
4
Returned to You
The apostilled document comes back by tracked post, or you collect it from our City of London office — whichever suits you.

Death Certificate Types — What the FCDO Accepts

The FCDO legalises the certified certificate issued by a UK registrar. Not every document issued after a death qualifies, and sending the wrong one costs a week.

DocumentNotes
✅  Register office certified copyThe standard certified copy of the entry in the death register, issued by the register office for the district where the death was registered. This is the correct document.
✅  GRO certified copyA certified copy ordered from the General Register Office. Fully acceptable — and the fastest route if the original has been sent elsewhere. We can order one for you.
✅  Scottish and Northern Irish extractsExtracts issued by National Records of Scotland or GRO Northern Ireland are legalised in the same way.
❌  Coroner's interim certificateAn Interim Certificate of the Fact of Death is issued while an inquest is open. Because the death is not yet fully registered, it is treated differently and often rejected by foreign authorities — talk to us before sending one.
❌  Certificate for burial or cremationThe "green form" and the cremation paperwork are not records of the registered death and cannot be used in place of a death certificate.
❌  Photocopies and scansThe FCDO will not legalise a photocopy or a printout, even a certified one. Order an additional certified copy instead — it is cheaper than the delay.
You Can Order More Than One Certified Copy — and You Probably Should
An apostilled certificate normally stays with the foreign authority that receives it. If the estate involves a bank, a notary and a pension provider, each will want its own legalised copy. Ordering three certified copies at the outset and apostilling them together is considerably cheaper and faster than coming back three times. Multiple documents in one job also qualify for a reduced rate — ask us for a combined quote.

Questions

Death Certificate Apostille — Common Questions

Yes — the FCDO legalises a certified certificate issued by a registrar, not a photocopy. If your only copy is already committed elsewhere, we can order additional certified copies from the General Register Office and apostille those.
Standard service is from £79 and takes 72 hours from receipt at our City of London office. Next-day service is £135 — same-day FCDO submission, apostille released the next working day.
Yes, and you should if the estate has more than one foreign institution to satisfy. Multiple documents submitted together qualify for a reduced rate — send us the details and we will quote the whole set.
Possibly, but the interim certificate the coroner issues is not a registered death certificate and many foreign authorities will not accept it. Send us a photograph before posting anything and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth submitting or whether it is better to wait for the full certificate.
For Hague Apostille Convention countries — most of Europe, the Americas, Australia and much of Asia — yes. The UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, China and a handful of others require embassy attestation after the apostille. Tell us the destination and we will confirm the full route and cost up front.
Spanish, Italian and French probate files usually require a sworn translation; the UAE requires a legalised Arabic translation. We can arrange these alongside the apostille.
Yes. Most clients use Royal Mail Special Delivery. You can also drop documents at our Guildhall Yard office, or we can arrange a courier collection if you would rather not post an irreplaceable document.
